Also, 184 individuals are facing criminal prosecution by federal and state prosecutors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCon artists take advantage of timeshare owners who have been in tough financial straits and are desperate to sell their timeshares,\u201d Charles A. Harwood, Acting Director of the FTC\u2019s Bureau of Consumer Protection, said during a press conference in Miami.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cThey persuade owners to pay fat up-front fees by saying they have someone ready to buy the property, but that\u2019s a lie,&#8221; said Harwood.  Harwood had this advice for timeshare owners: &#8220;Never pay for a promise, get everything in writing first, and pay only after your unit is sold.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot allow our vulnerable real property owners to continue to be the target of fraud schemes,\u201d said Wilfredo A. Ferrer, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese victims, many of them elderly or in financial distress, looked to sell their units to help make ends meet or pay other bills.  Instead, they were defrauded out of more than $14 million in total.  Such fraud will not be tolerated,\u201d said Ferrer.<\/p>\n<p><b>How it works<\/b><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-7j1uKXGrgg0\/UbXlzHRo4kI\/AAAAAAAAI60\/97UiHi-ATPo\/s1600\/timeshare-resale-scams-infographic_large+(1).jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em;margin-right: 1em\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"640\" src=\"\/content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/timeshare-resale-scams-infographic_large1.jpg?fa0178627d172c327fbfc5d05751f53c\" width=\"339\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Fraudulent timeshare resellers lure consumers into paying hefty upfront fees, falsely claiming to have interested buyers ready to pay top dollar for the properties.  They claim sales are about to happen, but there are no buyers, and consumers lose hundreds or thousands of dollars.<\/p>\n<p>These scams reach consumers via unsolicited email, and radio, TV and online advertising.
